NORSE Scientific Symposium
The NORSE Scientific Symposium is an annual virtual meeting convening global experts to share the latest research and strengthen clinical collaboration on New Onset Refractory Status Epilepticus (NORSE) and Febrile Infection-Related Epilepsy Syndrome (FIRES).
Why This Symposium Matters
NORSE and FIRES strike without warning and remain poorly understood. Families and clinicians often face long waits for answers and limited treatment options. Research is fragmented. Data is scarce. Lives are on the line.
The NORSE Scientific Symposium brings together neurologists, intensivists, immunologists, researchers, and frontline clinicians to change that. The event is endorsed by the Neurocritical Care Society and provides a platform for cross-disciplinary learning, collaboration, and action.
Our goal is simple but urgent: to fast-track progress in diagnosing, treating, and understanding these rare and devastating conditions.
What to Expect
The Symposium is focused, fast-paced, and practical. Each session tackles real-world challenges faced by clinicians and researchers, with plenty of time for questions and discussion. Presentations often include emerging data and experimental approaches that haven’t yet made it to publication.
Key elements include:
Themed sessions with global speakers
Focus on clinical application and translational science
Regular updates on the NORSE/FIRES Biorepository
Opportunities to get involved in multi-centre collaborations
A commitment to patient-family centred research priorities
Who Should Attend?
The Symposium is designed for clinicians, scientists, and researchers working in:
Neurology and epilepsy
Paediatric or adult critical care
Neuroimmunology
Infectious disease
Neuroscience, genomics or translational medicine
Whether you’ve worked in this field for years or are new to NORSE/FIRES, your voice and expertise are welcome.

If you’re a family member or advocate
You’re warmly invited to attend the NORSE Family Conference, held the day after the Symposium. Many research priorities raised there have directly influenced clinical trial funding decisions including our recent PCORI application.
Previous NORSE Scientific Symposium Recordings
Recordings are freely available for professionals and families who wish to revisit sessions or catch up on what they missed. Each event offers a snapshot of how the field is evolving and where it’s heading next.
