NORSE/FIRES Family Conference May 2024

Date: Wednesday, May 1, 2024

Audience: Patients, families, clinicians, and scientists

This virtual conference brought together experts, families, and clinicians to share the latest updates in NORSE/FIRES research and care. Topics included transitioning from ICU care to long-term support, as well as the growing recognition of Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS)—a set of physical, cognitive, and psychological difficulties that can persist after an ICU stay.

Importantly, the conference also acknowledged Post-Intensive Care Syndrome-Families (PICS-F), which refers to the emotional and cognitive toll experienced by family members who witness their loved ones’ ICU treatment. For many, the impact of NORSE extends beyond the patient to those who love and care for them.

Additional Resources Discussed:

●       Overview of Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS)

●       Epilepsy Foundation Bereavement Support Guide (PDF)

●       National Center for PTSD (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) – although hosted by the VA, this site offers valuable information for anyone dealing with trauma-related stress, not just veterans.
